The 1980 Z1-R took the earlier Z1-R's bodywork and engine and fitted KZ1000-derived chassis parts: revised steering geometry, a shorter wheelbase from a new swingarm, softer rear suspension, a four-into-two exhaust and a larger tank. Reviewers liked its stability but found low-speed handling heavy and the ride stiff, with restrictive emissions equipment needing a choke period after cold starts.
